A WARM WELCOME TO NALISHA PARMAR

A WARM WELCOME TO NALISHA PARMAR

Nalisha Parmar joins Silsoe Odours for an internship at the odour management consultancy

We welcome a summer intern into our odour management team at Silsoe Odours this year. We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Nalisha Parmar. She joins us this summer as a Junior Odour Consultant (Intern).

Nalisha comes to us from the University of East Anglia. She will shortly complete her studies in BSc Environmental Earth Sciences. While studying, Nalisha has demonstrated a notable commitment to environmental management and sustainability.

During Nalisha’s time with Silsoe Odours, she will convert her theoretical knowledge into real-world experience in the odour management arena.

At the end of the summer, Nalisha heads to the University of Southampton, where she’ll study MSc Environmental Monitoring and Assessment. She hopes the experience she gains with us will be integral to her master’s degree course. And as a result, be invaluable in her chosen career path.

WHY OFFER AN ODOUR MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP?

We feel strongly that it is incredibly important to support entry-level talent in environmental science fields. Of course, in our world that translates specifically to a role in odour management. So, we have designed our summer internship with this in mind. IEMA conducted its “State of the Profession” survey in 2018. They conclude that professionals in environment and sustainability feel extremely satisfied with their jobs. We believe it is important to support this trend. In particular, we want to support women coming into the field.

Statistics from the survey reveal that almost seven in ten environment and sustainability professionals say they are satisfied or highly satisfied in their jobs. The one third of respondents who have moved into the profession from another sector are even more happy, with their satisfaction rising to 78% – 14% above the UK average.

WHAT’S INVOLVED?

Nalisha works across all our odour management services, including as an odour panellist in the Silsoe Odours laboratoryNalisha reports to Silsoe Odours Director, Robert Sneath. She works across all areas of odour management consultancy while under Robert’s expert guidance. As a result, she will gain experience of the various types of odour sampling methods. Nalisha has passed our stringent requirements to act as an odour panellist, giving her direct experience in our UKAS-accredited odour laboratory. While in the lab she also spends time shadowing the Laboratory Manager to understand the full odour testing procedure. Finally, Nalisha supports ongoing odour management projects across all our services. We want to give her as much exposure as possible to the full variety of work we do.

European Odour Standard BSEN13725

We also want to make sure Nalisha understands the various air quality guidance documents and the European odour standard BSEN13725. Robert acts as the UK expert for the odour standard. He has been involved with its development since 1996, so she’s in very capable hands.
