We offer a comprehensive range of professional odour sectors, providing measurement, independent analysis, and impact diagnostics. This combination of skilled expertise and advice has been proven to help clients understand the nature of their odour emissions, and find ways to control the impact they have on the environment.

We are proud to be the first specialist odour laboratory in the UK to have been awarded UKAS accreditation, and we are a dedicated team of odour scientists with a shared passion to provide effective and efficient measures to reduce odour pollution.

ODOUR SECTORS THAT CAN BENEFIT FROM OUR ODOUR CONSULTANCY SERVICES INCLUDE

Waste Water Treatment and Sewage Facilities

There’s no escaping the fact that installations treating industrial and domestic effluent are likely to have to deal with odour pollution and bioaerosols as a side product. The situation is exacerbated if the treatment plant is located close to residential housing, or land allocated for commercial use, especially in the case of older plants where the scale and open design tends to add to the problem. Quite apart from the treatment facilities themselves, the loading and unloading of vehicles on the site can also impact on the local environment.Waste Water Treatment and Sewage Facilities Odour Sectors

As experienced odour assessment consultants, we can help by:

  • Monitoring odours from processes and tanks.
Assessing the performance of odour control equipment.
  • Identifying the predominant sources of odours.
  • Providing quantitative design information for the odour control equipment supplier.
  • Estimating the extent of the odour impact area, using dispersion modelling.

We would begin by carrying out a comprehensive odour survey, in order to understand and interpret both the conditions and the context within which odour pollution is occurring. The data collected will then be interpreted at our odour laboratory.

We will always use our scientific findings to provide practical and effective solutions for our clients.

Composting Facilities

We all recognise the important role composting sites play in helping to reduce global atmospheric pollution by diverting biodegradable waste from landfill. However, the process of composting organic matter causes the emission of volatile substances, many of which are malodorous. This in turn has been proven to have an impact on local residents and business owners, affecting their quality of life and – in some instances – prejudicing them against the composing processes which are designed to enhance our quality of life in the long run.

Composting Facilities odour sectorsSilsoe Odours Ltd has experience of dealing with these kinds of complex issues, and we are able to offer expert help and tailored odour sectors to reduce odour emissions:

  • Field Odour Survey – our odour assessment consultants systematically record the odours at a series of observation points downwind of the plant. This process identifies the specific source of on-site odours and helps to determine whether the facilities are impacting the local environment with odour pollution.
  • Independent Odour Analysis – data from the odour survey will be tested in our odour laboratory in order to quantify the odour emissions and identify the sources. This process will also provide quantitative design information for process modification, or for the odour control equipment supplier.
  • Smoke Testing – we check the potential emission leakage from plant buildings designed to contain odour pollution. Being able to locate the leakages leads to quick and efficient remediation.
  • Dispersion Modelling – the data collected will be utilised to perform a dispersion modelling exercise allowing our odour assessment consultants to estimate the extent of the area affected by odour pollution, and the potential impact on quality of life for residents within that area.

We will always use our scientific findings to provide practical and effective solutions in our odour sectors.

Industrial

Whilst there are many industrial processes, such as foundries, refineries and rendering plants, that have consistently emitted odorous compounds, urban and residential planning has – for the most part – sought to ensure a minimum impact of odour pollution by creating a ‘separation zone’ between residential developments and industrial plants. The growth of the UK population is, however, testing the existing accommodation which requires local councils to make an assessment on behalf of new housing development’s residents. As odour consultants working across the UK, we are now seeing an encroachment on the ‘separation zone’ which is having a significant impact on the quality of life for local residents.

Silsoe Odours Ltd has extensive experience of helping clients to reduce odour emissions in the industrial sector. We offer professional management in odour sectors, including:

  • Field Odour Survey – using a range of observation posts downwind of the industrial complex, our odour assessment consultants collect comprehensive data on the source and concentration of the odours emitted.
  • Independent Odour Analysis – data collected as part of the odour survey is rigorously tested in our odour laboratory as a means of identifying the molecular structure of the compounds and their sources. This is crucial information for the development of process modification, or for the odour control equipment supplier.
  • Dispersion Modelling – our odour assessment consultants use the data collected to model the area around the industrial complex, determining the extent of the impact and the likely effect of quality of life for those living nearby.
  • Odour Management Planning – once the data has been independently analysed, our odour assessment consultants work with clients on remediation planning for identified areas of odour leakage.

We will always use our scientific findings to provide practical and effective solutions for our clients.

Bio Fuels/Anaerobic Digestion

The benefits of anaerobic digestion sites across the UK are undeniable. The breaking down of organic material – diverted from landfill – produces biogas, a methane rich gas that is now being used as a fuel, and as a source of nutrients that can be used as fertiliser. Making the most of our rubbish by turning it into renewable energy is an innovative and forward-looking technology which benefits the local community, the agricultural sector, energy entrepreneurs and the environment. The one big drawback is that the plants are associated with unpleasant odours, and this can make them a source of acrimony with local residents.

Silsoe Odours Ltd has experience of working in the anaerobic digestion sector. We are able to offer a range of tailor-made odour sectors to clients wanting to reduce odour emissions in this field. These include:

  • Field Odour Surveys – Our odour assessment consultants will test the source and concentration of the odour emissions by setting up a number of observation posts downwind of the digestion plant. The survey determines the exact location of odours, and measures their travelling distance.
  • Independent Odour Analysis – the site odour survey data is tested in our odour laboratory, and independently analysed in order to ascertain the source, concentration, and compounds. Results from this process will provide evidence required for process modification, and quantitative design information for your odour control equipment supplier.
  • Smoke Testing – Where plant buildings have been designed to contain odour pollution, we use smoke testing to locate leakage.
  • Dispersion Modelling – a process whereby the impact of odour pollution on the local environment is assessed and the resultant diminishment of quality of life is determined. This give a clear indication of the size and complexity of the problem to be dealt with.
  • Odour Management Planning – the scientific data is used as the foundation for remedial action planning.

We will always use our scientific findings to provide practical and effective solutions for our clients.

Food Factories

We all know that the smell of home cooking can lift our mood, get our gastric juices flowing, and set taste buds quivering. How different though, is the smell of fried bacon, a burger, or sizzling sausages in a pan, to the odours than can emanate from the factory exhaust stack where these products are prepared? Paradoxically, the odours from food factories tend to be the cause of the most vociferous complaints from local residents who feel affronted at having to tolerate the smells associated with the preparation of food that will later appear on their supermarket shelves.

Food Factories odour sectorsAt Silsoe Odours Ltd we have a good deal of experience in this area, and we are committed to helping clients to reduce odour emissions impacting local residential areas. There is a range of professional services we can offer, these include:

  • Field Odour Survey – tracing the range of odour emissions emanating from a site, and understanding their potency and travelling trajectory is key to taking remedial action. Our odour assessment consultants set up observation posts downwind of the food plant, and capture data relating to source and concentration of odours.
  • Hedonic Tone Assessment – using data from the odour survey, we undertake an hedonic tone assessment in our odour laboratory. This provides clients with a useful assessment into just how unpleasant an odour is to the human nose, which gives a clear indication of the impact it is likely to have upon local residents.
  • Dispersion Modelling – having gained an insight into the impact of the odour emissions, our odour assessment consultants undertake dispersion modelling as a means of understanding the extent to which the local environment is likely to be subject to odour pollution.
  • Odour Management Planning – finally, the data is used to provide a scientific base for planning effective remedial action.

We will always use our scientific findings to provide practical and effective solutions for our clients.

Planners

As the population in the UK looks set to keep growing, the use of brownfield sites for housing developments is likely to be considered as an increasingly sensible option for urban planners. The brownfield site doesn’t come without its problems however; residents of new housing may find themselves living cheek-by-jowl with industrial, or waste facilities nearby, and being assailed daily by the odours that are associated with these facilities.

The continued erosion of the cordon sanitaire which has, until now, provided an effective buffer between the industrial and residential environments has involved Silsoe Odours Ltd in a good deal of work in this area. We are committed to preventing odour pollution wherever possible, and we have developed a range of services to help planners maintain housing growth without creating an unpleasant environment for residents to live in.

Our services include:

  • Safe Distance Consultation – our odour assessment consultants work with local industries to determine the ‘safe distance’ between them and the proposed housing development.
  • Field Odour Survey – where access to local industrial plants, or a waste water facility is not feasible, we carry out a survey of odour pollution by setting up a series of observation points downwind of potential polluters, in order to assess the range of odours in the area, the impact they could have on the local environment. Scientific data is then presented as evidence to planners who are then able to assess how best to proceed with their investment.

We will always use our scientific findings to provide practical and effective solutions for our clients through our services in the odour sectors.

Commercial/Restaurant Kitchens

We’ve all experienced the pleasures of restaurant food smells as we walk through our local town or city, however the constant smells emanating from a restaurant kitchen can be highly unpleasant to local residents, office workers or shop-keepers who have no means of escape day-in, day-out. This is an ongoing and complex problem, given that restaurants are part of the life-blood of an urban culture.

At Silsoe Odours Ltd, we’ve encountered this particular area of work a good deal in our twenty years of experience in the odour sectors, and we’re always fascinated by the level of acrimony that can ensue from the smells that come out of a kitchen. This is a problem that’s not going to disappear, so we have developed a range of professional services to help restaurant owners reduce odour emissions, and enhance their relations with their neighbours.

Commercial Restaurant KitchensOur services include:

  • Site Odour Survey – our odour assessment consultants will visit the premises and survey the range of odours being emitted, their source, and their trajectory.
  • Independent Odour Analysis – data collected in the odour survey is tested in our odour laboratory in order to determine the source, concentration and compounds. We can also undertake hedonic testing which gives an indication of how unpleasant a particular odour is to the human nose.
  • Odour Data Report – the resulting data is presented, providing clients with valuable input for their odour abatement equipment supplier. The data can also be useful as additional information to accompany a planning application.
  • Odour Management Planning – we can use the report to plan with our clients remedial actions to reduce odour emissions.

We will always use our scientific findings to provide practical and effective solutions for our clients.
