WHY WE PLAN OUR ODOUR LAB UPDATES IN THE SPRING

WHY WE PLAN OUR ODOUR LAB UPDATES IN THE SPRING

Spring is the perfect time to make updates in the odour lab

At Silsoe Odours, we are big advocates for planning when it comes to how you manage odour. Making a simple odour plan for the year gives you a valuable tool. You can use it to monitor and manage your odour control measures. When you follow the simple maintenance and improvement steps you identify in your plan, you can minimise your odour emissions and therefore avoid complaints, permit contraventions and potential legal issues. Similarly, we follow our own advice in the odour lab to plan, plan, plan. Each year, during the spring, we shut down our laboratory analysis services for two weeks. During this time, we calibrate our olfactometer and make any updates needed in our odour lab.

CALIBRATING THE OLFACTOMETER

The olfactometer is critical to operating the odour lab.

The olfactometer is critical to operating the odour lab.

The olfactometer is a key piece of equipment in the odour lab. Using it, our panel of human assessors can measure the concentration of an odour sample. We return the olfactometer to the manufacturer every year for a full calibration and maintenance service. In this way, we ensure we comply with the European Odour Standard EN 13725 and ISO 17025. Calibrating our equipment is vital to our quality control standards. It also forms part of the responsibilities mandated by our odour lab’s UKAS accreditation. By doing this, we offer you added confidence that our odour analysis equipment operates at the standards you expect.

UPDATING THE ODOUR LAB

When our olfactometer is out of action, we have to temporarily shut down the odour lab for a fortnight. This gives us a great opportunity to ‘spring clean’ the lab. This year, the team have also donned their overalls and gathered their paintbrushes. As a result, you will notice that our pre-lab area has a refreshed look on your next visit. It is particularly important that we do any odorous work, such as painting, during a shutdown. The fumes from paint can potentially affect the results of odour testing. So we need to make sure the lab is finished, sufficiently ventilated and free of any residual odours before we resume our everyday activities.

VISIT THE LAB

All things being well, the odour lab will be back up and running on Monday 3rd April. If you need to book any odour testing services, call us on 01525 860222. You can also email us at info@silsoeodours.co.uk. You are also welcome to visit us if you would like to look at our newly spruced-up lab.
