EN13725:2022 – Silsoe Odours Adopts the Latest European Odour Standard

Staying at the forefront of odour management industry standards is paramount. In 2022, a new version of the European Odour Standard, EN13725, reached publication. This was significant for Silsoe Odours, as well as the broader odour industry. Our Director, Robert Sneath, played a pivotal role in its development. Silsoe Odours began working to align with the new standard shortly after its publication. UKAS subsequently began granting formal accreditation to BSEN13725:2022 on 2nd January 2024. As a result, we are pleased to confirm that Silsoe Odours has successfully achieved the updated accreditation. In this blog, we explore the EN13725:2022 standard. We discuss its importance, recent changes, and our commitment to excellence.
A QUICK OVERVIEW OF EN13725:2022
The standard is officially titled “EN13725:2022 Stationary Source Emissions – Determination of Odour Concentration by Dynamic Olfactometry and Odour Emission Rate”. It is a vital standard that provides a methodology for odour professionals. It enables us to objectively measure the concentration of odours in gaseous samples. We also follow it when determining odour emission rates from stationary sources. EN13725:2022 aims to:
- Improve consistency within odour laboratories
- Achieve comparable results among laboratories
- Connect the results to a traceable reference material, ensuring accuracy
EN13725:2022 is important in assessing and managing odour emissions. It outlines how to achieve consistent, reliable data for all European odour laboratories. The odour standard also helps regulatory bodies and operators ensure compliance with odour regulations.
RECENT CHANGES TO THE ODOUR STANDARD
The 2022 revision brings several improvements to the EN13725 standard, including:
- Health and Safety Recommendations: Comprehensive health and safety instructions for those involved in dynamic olfactometry. This extends to panel members and sampling technicians, in the laboratory and on-site.
- Enhanced Sampling and Pre-Dilution Procedures: More rigorous procedures are specified for sampling and determining pre-dilution ratios. This ensures that the odour measurement process is more precise and accurate.
- Thorough Measurement Uncertainty Assessment: Greater emphasis on assessing measurement uncertainty. This commitment adds another layer of reliability to the results.
- Exclusions and Inclusions: EN13725:2022 specifies certain exclusions. These include field olfactometry and measurement of exposure. It also incorporates other vital changes to make the standard more comprehensive.
OUR COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE
The new standard reached publication in March 2022. However, some organisations faced a complex process to meet the new requirements. As a result, UKAS began accrediting to EN13725:2022 from January 2024. Silsoe Odours takes pride in maintaining industry-leading technical excellence. With this in mind, we began working to the new standard for all odour sampling and testing activities shortly after its publication, as part of our ongoing commitment to excellence. It means our clients continue to receive the most accurate, reliable and consistent odour services. By proactively adopting the new standard, we maintain the highest standards. We also reinforce our commitment to client satisfaction. Silsoe Odours achieved UKAS accreditation to BSEN13725:2022 on 2nd January 2024.
